Performing Arts Residencies

ELA + Drama Integration

We are seeking 3 schools in the L.A. area to expand our model of Co-Lateral Professional Development.

  • Direct instruction for TKK – Grade 8 students

  • Concurrent professional development for their teachers

Educate the Whole Child is an initiative of the Myrin Institute, an operating foundation. For the past ten years, we have been piloting multi-intelligent professional development programs, artistic residencies and instructional materials in Manhattan, the Bronx and Los Angeles.

At PS 62 in the Bronx, the energy generated by performer Helena- Joyce Wright is picked up by third grade teacher Jahira Flores (to Helena’s left) and imitated by her students.

Participating teachers will learn a sequence of fast-paced performing arts activities— side by side with their students. Our field-tested model for Co-Lateral Professional Development requires no additional out-of-classroom PD time. At the end of 5 classroom visits from an especially-trained teaching artist, ELA teachers will be able to direct activities and disciplined presentations that integrate acting and movement skills into their every day ELA lessons.

ELA + Drama

5 Classroom Coaching Sessions

supplemented by OPTIONAL large group assemblies

The teachers will direct language activities from The ELA + Drama TOOLBOX. Each vocal and movement exercise is clearly described. The teaching artists will support the teachers as they try out their new directing skills. The professionals will also help establish high standards for student performance.

OPTIONAL interactive assemblies can reinforce and enrich the classroom experiences — part Literacy Lessons, part Game Show excitement. Students and their teachers perform, compete, cooperate, and carry off their recently learned linguistic stunts together. Schools can elect up to three instructional assemblies and one performance assembly in addition to the 5 basic classroom visits.

A Team of Arts Integration Specialists

Experienced teaching artists from The Actors Fund Career Center of Los Angeles have been especially trained for this unique program. They will coach the performance skills that teachers identify as the most practical for helping their students achieve academic success.

“Educate the Whole Child has brought JOY into the curriculum. What better way to demonstrate understanding a text than by acting it out?”
Lisa Manfredonia, Principal PS 62, Bronx, NY

These programs promoting professional development in arts integration were first created and piloted by Howard Katzoff in 33 New York City schools through a partnership between Bronx District 8 and The Actors Fund Career Center of New York.
